In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a shepherd boy. His life was pure, and unsophisticated. His main role was mainly to tend to his flock of rams.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes through the single tree on the hilltop were his constant associates. Day in day, guarding his charges imbued in him a sense of tranquil contentment.
However, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. In one such instance out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous scheme.
Tales of predators preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy decided to leveraged this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf read more is that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This game laughed for a few more days. However, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
